My sophomore year in high school I had a band for a day.
I was lead vocals/lyricist. We only existed for a day because our guitarist was self taught and couldn't really play, our bassist had been taking lessons for a short time, I was off key and wrote emo lyrics, and our drummer was the only person who knew what he was doing besides the violinist...she was freaking amazing as I recall...what kind of a band were we planning? Who knows.
I danced on stage with the Flaming Lips.
Yeah, it's hard to believe. Lollapalooza 2006: We're sitting on the lawn minding our own business when some 40 year old guy with a beard squats down by our blanket and says he has a job to do. He asks if we like the Flaming Lips. Of course we like the Flaming Lips! Do we want to dance with them? Is he serious? Oh yes. Here's backstage passes. Sweet! It happened. If you look in press pictures I'm the alien with the bright pink converse on :P
I've paid $260 for a concert ticket.
It was BJORK, of course. And it was worth it. Even better, I got a ticket for about $100 the second time and my seats were 4TH ROW!!! It all evens out in the end since I only paid $35 to see the Mars Volta when I wasn't even planning on seeing them. I need to go to more concerts than I do. I want to get over to the Blind Pig sometime soon. Also, the metal frat.
I have a friend who is married to a member of the Arcade Fire.
Okay. So Jenny graduated from Northwestern in 2003 or thereabouts. She worked at my dance studio while she went there and continued to work there after she graduated. She worked in the office and taught some beginning jazz classes and hip hop. My freshman year in high school I had a break between classes so I'd go get dinner and then eat in the office and talk to Jenny while she worked. She was so cool. We talked about music a lot. My sophomore year she made me a mix and it was AMAZING. It's part of the reason I'm so into the music I listen to now (the other half is/was the 4 year crush). One of the songs on there was "Power Out." I liked it a lot so I mentioned that to her. She was like, "Oh yeah, that's my friend's band!" I thought that was cool. Well Mr. 4 Year Crush was ASTONISHED that I'd heard of them. It was the CD in his CD player. IMAGINE THAT! Well I go tell that to Jenny and she's like, "Laura, that's my BOYFRIEND'S band!" I've met him a couple times, nice guy. He went to Northwestern too. Well this fall they got MARRIED. Too cool that he recognizes me (I'm not entirely sure he knows my name but I'm the crazy chick who made him sign a copy of Funeral in 2005 before they were wildly popular in the U.S. Yes, I'm elitist at times). I feel so frickin' cool. That's the story.
I discovered Bjork, Radiohead, Pavement, and the Cure at the public library.
Yeah, who wishes they were as cool as me? I just checked lots of CDs out from the library about 4 years ago (maybe because of Mr. 4 year, a little). I just picked names that sounded good to me. I got Bjork's Greatest Hits, Radiohead's OK Compuer, Pavement's Slanted & Enchanted, and the Cure's Bloodflowers. Loved them. I checked out some bad stuff too...everyone makes mistakes. I didn't hang onto the mistakes so it's okay. I think I have good taste.
LISTENING TOO LONG, TO ONE SONG! LISTENING TOO LONG, TO ONE SONG! LISTENING TOO LONG, TO ONE SONG! LISTENING TOO LONG, TO ONE SONG! SING ME SPANISH TECHNO. SING ME SPANISH TECHNO. SING ME SPANISH TECHNO.SING ME SPANISH TECHNO.
